Heart's Pasture Organic Chicken Manure
Chicken manure has been one of the most foundational fertilizers used throughout time. Plowing, shoveling, or spading it into the ground where flowers or garden crops will grow increases organic matter and water-holding capacities, and when applied correctly, it enhances the biological structure of the soil. Poultry manure, on average, contains 5 percent nitrogen, 3 percent phosphorous, and 2 percent potash making it an extremely nutrient-dense option for soil amendments. Be aware that this is considered a "hot" manure. Extra care and planning should be taken into consideration when applying.
Example Amendments
In the fall poultry manure could be spread and worked into the soil anywhere that you intend to plant flowers or fruits and vegetables the following year. By doing so at this time, it allows the soil to better break down and utilize the available nutrients. It also supplies your soil with living microorganisms that will thrive come spring.
In the spring, poultry manure could be carefully applied to rows or beds that will grow nitrogen-loving plants, such as squash or tomatoes. It is important to apply small amounts with this method and to research ahead of time what your plants need to thrive.
At any time of the year you can add poultry manure to your compost pile. It will ignite the process of breaking down organic matter and create a humus unlike anything else. Once this compost pile has completed the process of breaking everything down over time, this sweet-smelling, nutrient-rich humus can be applied anywhere without burning other plants (perhaps you have turned it a couple of times and made sure that it stayed moist by spraying it with water during the beginning stages). This method takes time, but there is a big reward at the end, as what is added to the soil with cured compost is more than the sum of its parts.
