You Can Do It, Too
A long while ago, before Heart's Pasture Farm was even a thought, we were growing carrots and tomatoes on a second story apartment deck in the big city of Indianapolis. Even though our yields were small and our season was short, there was nothing like physically seeing a baby carrot grown from seed, or eating a tomato fresh from the vine. Due to limiting factors of space, and a general lack of experience, the idea of growing food was exciting, yet at the same time seemed impossible. But it worked every time. And it can for you, too.
There is something inside every person that yearns for real food and experiences. Whether that is growing fruit or vegetables, or working with animals, our common purpose is nurtured and the cycle of life feels more complete and less mechanized. The easy life has taught all of us to be dependent on the system in order to find happiness. As someone seeking to homestead, that notion will be challenged on a daily basis. In what other way can a person create something more meaningful than by homesteading, igniting that dormant flame of health and independence?

How We Can Help
Any time the jump to homesteading is made without the help of previous generations, it is difficult to intuitively succeed. Combine failure to the fact that, with today's technologies, we can literally be anywhere in a short amount of time. Most of our days are filled with other obligations. This fragments our connection to home, trivializing our truest sense of place. More and more people are waking up to realize that they want to homestead at the place that feels the most aligned with their purpose, finding their true home and the connection to place in the process. However, due to the fragmented, fast-paced world, it is often difficult to do it. The lost generation of skilled and knowledgeable homesteaders that could teach and explain is often time no longer there. Failure is a natural biproduct of this type of work, but it doesn't have to be difficult to have success. Our homestead consulting service helps you narrow the gap between success and failure, equipping you with the tools necessary so that you can quickly succeed.

Sometimes seeing the bigger picture is difficult. For those times, you have us to help you. Creating an optimal design that meets the needs of your present and future goals is important. Experience
When books and online tutorials are not enough, sometimes personalized guidance and first-hand experience is needed. For this option, we work together planning the completion of an experience of your choice. This is usually a specific task that involves skill and is less overwhelming and more meaningful if learned in person. After planning out the experience timeline and what materials are needed, we get together to teach the skill, and offer care and guidance to you while you try it out first hand.
Examples:
People who choose this option have a specific skill in mind that they want to learn and believe that it is best to be taught it in person. Upon it's completion, they feel confident to continue strengthening this skill independently, without our guidance.

Build
If building a small structure is in your homestead plans, we may be able to help. This option is customized to your needs. We have experience building small (moveable) structures that are a perfect fit for different animals. We typically work with wood and high quality materials. Our structures become a natural part of the land, not something that looks out of place. Options include easy to assemble kits and ones that are built on site.
An Ideal Option:
People who choose this option may not have extensive carpentry experience. They want to to build something that looks and feels true to their ethos. Upon completion of the build, it fits seamlessly into the environment for which it is meant. They feel good knowing that they helped the build process in the best way that suits their skill level.
An Ideal Option:
- The Missouri Sunlit Hog Shelter (1970s) is durable and has a removable roof segment, making it an open-air concept. It is easily customizable and can be constructed of a variety of different types of wood. It sits on finger-jointed cedar, preventing rot. High quality materials are used such as cedar shingles for the roof and 304 stainless steel nails and screws for framing and finishing work. This structure can be modified as a dog house or a small goat shelter.
